raspy throats and hot lips; the final studio blog

ten in the am, saturday; back at 'er.

with only the vocals and a few other things left on the record, we started on the first tune and worked our way through, verse by verse.  the process wasn't as grueling as i thought it would be. we basically did three or four takes of each part and picked the best one.

myself and Cam were able to get through the first three songs (while Nathan napped a bit and drank some b's), before our special guests came in.  Stephen had a great idea of adding a string arrangement to the end of one of the tunes.  this was something we had previously thought would sound awesome, but it wasn't until he mentioned that he knew a cellist and violinist, that we jumped on the idea. Stephen's friends Hannah and Lyssa came in and laid down some tearful stuff and really rocked the tune. after they were finished, we decided to stop tearing out our throats for the day and parted ways to return on sunday to finish up the rest of the vocals.

sunday came, as well as a mild throat and nasal cold on my behalf. great.
we power-housed through the first tune and started on the track doubles, when we had our first group of guest vocalists. Cam's pops and bro came out, as well as a friend of Nathan and Amanda's.  we sang a line from one of the songs a few times, got some good takes, and went for lunch.

after lunch we ripped through the doubles and started on the final, most aggressive song. this was a good idea, cause if this was the first song of the day, it would have been the last for my throat.
after getting a good start on the tune, our second group of gang vocalists showed up.  four of my buddies drove up from Cookstown to help sing along and eat some free candy. oh yea, the candy.
apparently one of the Baldwins (Steve didn't even know which one), came into the studio the previous week for some promo stuff, so the studio bought candy for his majesty (don't ask me why).  the candy included "hot lips," "big feet," and of course "green thumbs." needless to say, the Baldwin didn't eat very much of them, so that was our snack over the course of the weekend.
once the second group session of vocals was completed, we finished up the vocals on the last track and called 'er a day (with little to no life left in us.).

after about roughly sixty hours in the studio, we have finished recording! we're all amazed and excited about what we accomplished in only three weekends. now its up to Steve and his mixing/mastering skills to finished 'er off. soon, the ep will be released. more info soon to come. oh snap.

Studio Days Three and Four

Day 3:

i arrived at the studio to find a snoozing Cam waiting in his car for me. not so "Sleepless" after all eh?
we entered Epik, said our hellos to Steve, and started carting in the ridiculous number of amps i had in the van to be used for guitar tones.
once we were done sweating (pretty much just me cause its a known fact that i sweat way too much.), we sat down and started working on the bass tone.  at the studio, there are processors that mimic different guitar and bass amps. there is an ampeg one for bass that sounds pretty spot on and decent, so instead of carting an 8x10 bass cab to the studio, we simply used this. we set up a sexy clean tone, worked with a delay pedal (for ominous spacious deliciousness), and a bass big muff (for exxxxtra dirrrty),  and started on the tracks. Cam finished up three tracks, i think, then we headed to subway for lunch break. while in subway, it seemed Steve gave the employees a slightly hard time while ordering, asking for more tomato sauce on it while on the final stages of concoction, etc. i thought it was funny.
upon our return we watched an episode of the mighty boosh and finished off our subway. this was my first boosh experience and i must say, as random and "out there" as it is, its pretty jokes. very monty python-ish.
after lunch, Cam finished up the rest of the tunes and we played em through and gave a listen to.
starting on guitar, we messed around with a few combinations of amps and cabs, and they all sounded pretty unique.  some of the older gear i had borrowed from my buddy Bryan from Starship Experience didn't sound quite as strong as what we were looking for, so we started with my own set-up. we figured we'd run through all the tunes that needed the tone of my gear, then switch up and add different parts with different amps.  i was able to get through three songs, and we called er a day.
today was a twelve hour day in the studio. ten to ten. needless to say, we're pooped, but ready for tomorrow.

Day 4:

ten o'clock rolled around so we got back at er. i went through the rest of the tunes through my amp, using my gibson sg and epiphone genesis as the frontal/lead guitars, and Steve's gibson sg and the studio's gibson les paul custom as backing guitars.
after getting through the tunes, Steve adding a sweet ebow part at the end of one, and myself adding an acoustic track backing an outro, we realized that no other tones were needed. we captured what i was looking for, and it sounds too good to screw with already. we figured we'd leave it at that.

all there is to do now is vocals, overdubs (if needed), and group vocals with some buddies who are gonna come out and sing along. this record is starting to sound like what we expected, plus a bunch more.  Steve is doing and awesome job, we're ok. if you are/know a band who wants to record at a sick studio with an awesome engineer, hit him up here: Stephen Kerr

teaser video to come. let excitement take over, if you dare.

Studio Days One and Two.

Day 1:

i almost didn't make it in time to greet Nathan and Amanda at the door.  saturday morning came too soon, even though i went to bed at about eleven and woke up around ten.
they showed up at my place, we loaded Nathan's previously broken down drum kit, as well as my gits' and Cam's bass, into my pops' van, and we headed for Epik Productions.
on our way down, we were supposed to pick up Cam from the downsview subway station, as the studio is semi-close by.  as we we're driving around, i received a phone call from Cam and decided to pull the van over on a side street.  just as i was making a right hand turn at the intersection, a crazed, old, italian (or something), man on a bike, carelessly drove himself into our lane and tried semi crossing the street. he drove right in front of the van. if i hadn't have seen him, the weekend would have not ended up so great after all. luckily, i did see the man, and proceeded to yell at him through the passenger window. i doubt he even knew what was going on. meanwhile, Cam tells me he's getting a ride from his bro and he'll meet us at the studio.
we find the place, meet Cam there, and enter the studio premiss, only to be greeted by my friend (now our friend), our producer, Stephen Kerr.
we set up Nathan's drums, plug the bass and git into the sound board, and run through the tracks.  Steve gives us some advice, we change a few tunes a bit, and proceed to beginning the scratch tracks.  for those of you that are unfamiliar, scratch tracks are recordings of instruments in which to use as a basis for  the actual instrumentals of the song. for us, we recorded bass, guitar, and vocals to a click track, so that Nathan could put his actual drum tracks to the song, then we go from there with the actual rest of the tracks. get it?
this whole while, Amanda, Nathan's wife, is taking awesome pictures of our performance, and sleeping on the couch in the studio. simultaneously? see the pics HERE if you "like" our facebook page (i think.).
lunch time. oh em gee. theres a California Sandwich right around the corner from the studio. we ate like starving kings. shit was spicy but fucking delicious. nuff said.
We finish lunch and Steve commences setting up the nineteen, soon to be fifteen, microphones surrounding the drum kit.  We get time enough for Nathan to lay the tracks down for the first tune off the record, then it is time to call 'er a wrap for the day.
Cam takes off, Nathan, Amanda, and I drink beer in my backyard with friends till about midnight, then errbody takes off for a shnooze.  surprisingly enough, I'm super tired, even without doing that much.

Day 2:

day two starts with a trip to Hot Stacks with Nathan and Amanda.  Amanda had the short stack pancakes, Nathan had the lumberjack, and I simply had scrambled eggs and bacon. needless to say, it was awesome. Amanda had her own shiat to do, so Nathan and I headed down to the studio to record the rest of the drum tracks.
i somehow got a cold (which i still have.), and spent the entire time blowing my nose and clicking Halls off my teeth through the talk-back mic at Nathan. he was not pleased.
At one point Nathan got the studio blues and got rattled while trying to record part of a tune. he then walked outside and stabbed a man with a broken drum stick, came back inside, and finished the track (yes to all, minus the murder.)
somehow, i end up tired again. me thinks my brain was just getting into the paralysis state known as studio mode. this is totes a possibility.
and that was basically the day. the drums are gonna sound dirty, in a good way. to see a brief video of the tracking, click HERE.

we couldn't be happier working with Steve at the beautiful studio that is Epik Productions. so far, we're diggin' it and we can't wait to reveal this record to you. next weekend we lay down guitar and bass.  get ready, cause she's gonna blow some skirts.

if i were to say...

oh em gee oh em gee oh em gee!!!!

today is monday of the labour day weekend of two thousand eleven.

tomorrow during our regular band practice, we will be recording the preproduction for the record. yes, this is rather short notice for the studio, but everything we've been doing has been on short notice, so why stop now? helping out with the rough pre-prod, will be the producer of my acoustic record, Stephen Hambly of North2South Recordz.

this saturday, we enter into epik productions to record our debut ep. in the words of Nathan earlier this week, "we're gonna make it our bitch."  throughout the recording, there will be pictures, as well as brief studio video updates, whilst we're in the lair.

hope you guys are as stoked as we are, cause we're pretty damn stoked. new ep, new merch, and nakedness all coming very soon!! ....well, probably no nakedness, but you never know.

Teasler Number Three

jam got pushed back a day due to miscommunication. sometimes we act like humans, although, with all we must accomplish with the new record beginning so soon, i'm starting to feel semi-robotic.  here's an ok acoustic version of "If I Were To Say." hope it tickles your excitement somewhat.  enjoy.

the fabulous five

this was a semi busy and eventful weekend. needless to say, Nathan and i played some mean beer pong at a party, and i ate at hot stacks twice. too good. we also had Amanda, Nathan's wife come take some promo shots at an abandoned house.  we may or may not have been trespassing, but meh, we weren't doin' nothin'.  shots should look sweet. they will be up and around soon, as well as a new facebook page to go with 'em.

so ladies and gents, we've decided. we're gonna stick to five tunes for the ep.  best just to focus on a few since we have a solid five down pretty much already, and we are on a super tight schedule. best not to rush anything. we still have a few kinks to work out, as well as a few vocals to mess around with, but we are very very stoked.

so many things are gonna happen so fast. you'll see.

oh, what a week.

so,

this has been a pretty interesting week for me.  it started with my cell phone cutting out of all service because a bill that the company had not yet sent to me, was actually over my spending cap.  now i must wait for five business days to text in front of my friends, and make them feel like they're not as important as who i'm texting. damn. next, the front left tire on my car popped, so i had to get a new pair for the front and get em put on and all that.  this would not have been such a big dig if i didn't just get fired from my job.  thank fuck for that though, i was gonna blow up the place for sure (that wouldn't have been a great idea, as it was a gas station.). no more ridiculous jobs that fucking suck. time to get serious.

aaaaannnyways, enough about me.  Nathan and i jam a few times through the week and we all jam together on one day through the week.  so far, Nathan and i have started pre-production on the album (for those that didn't read the last one, we go into the studio to record an ep on september 10th!).  holy shit, i just realized, the album gets underway, three weeks form today.  oh jeeez.
we've started working on one song at a time, setting the tempos and working out the kinks. so far so good, other than the fact that the metronome is the enemy at the moment, but you know what they say, practice makes perfect.

this weekend, we'll be taking some promo pictures to show you guys our ugly mugs, and to get the ball a'rollin.  Nathan's awesome wife, amanda, who has taken some photography courses to my understanding, will be taking the pics.  should turn out hairy, and sassy. this weekend, we also work on the pre-production for what has been started, fiddle with the rest, and work on a new-ish song that may or may not make the record.  we're also in the talks about pressing options, possibly getting some merh (tshirts, buttons, etc.), and starting to play some shows in the southern ontario area (for now), as soon as the record is ready to be in your hands. lots happening so friggin' soon.

we're gonna need a bigger boat.

"The Big News"

friday - awake @ 5am, fall asleep around 4:30am sat.
saturday - awake @ 11am, fall asleep around 5:15 am sun.
sunday - awake @ 10am, fall asleep at 1am mon.
monday - wake up at 5am to start the work week.

had a hometown cd release party this weekend for my latest solo album. t'was pretty awesome. friends and family came out to support, everyone was drunk by the end (which made me sound better), and it seemed like errrbuddy had a good time. i also played at a house party in alcona, which was a lot of fun as well. needless to say, i'm tired, or sleepless, rather. comma.

so here it is; The Big News. are you ready? i don't think you're ready. nah, you're not. i'll save it for another time.

just kidding. here it is: Sleepless hits the studio September 10th. holy poop eh? My good buddy Stephen Kerr is a music/engineering/recording/etc. student at Humber college in Toronto. he also is an intern at Epik Productions, a studio also in Toronto. he will be be producing the record at Epik, starting with scratch tracks (full band recordings to go by), followed by drums, guitar, bass, and of course vocals. we're only able to get into the studio on the weekends, as we all work through the week, but the ball has started rolling. we're aiming for six songs, although we may cut one or two. we are all super stoked to be getting into the studio as quickly as we are, as we want to get some tunes out to you as soon as possible and start playing some shows.

also coming up will be more teaser videos showing pre-production and other fun stuff, as well as a few sexy promo pictures. its gonna get hairy. beardwise, that is.

get stoked if you are not so already.

just drank a large regular coffee and a rockstar energy drink. should make for an interesting day...until i start seein' shit.

numba two

hey there ladies and gents,

here's the second teaser video.  Nathan wasn't around for jams, so Cam and i ate some humus and guacamole and filmed a short one.  we also ran over some lyrics and wrote a new tune.  it's kinda chill and pretty, but face ripping by the end of 'er.  should turn out deece.  hope your weekend was as good as mine.  enjoy the teasler!

Some Lyrics

bonnjoorno. here's lyrics for a few of the songs we've written. hopefully you don't read them and become as pessimistic as i am. oh, you'll see.

Waiting For The World To Explode

waiting for the world to explode, impatiantly. been getting so low, been creeping around. adding fuel to the fire. i wish your words would inspire. feeling so anxious, though there's nothing coming. i bet you can't drink that any faster. don't it go down so smooth? it comes with experience, and you already came. how does it feel to know you're in control?

If I Were To Say

if i were to say the things i mean, i think that i would scare myself more. the worlds gone to shit and everyone knows it. just keep to yourself. complain enough to drive any man crazy. are we fucking going crazy? it seems so wrong, and yet too easy. how they make it so hard, so hard on themselves. who doesn't love attention, but i'm not keeping count. it's not about the things you have, but who you share them with. will you share this with me?

Heavy Eyes

the time tolls late while liars and cheats still lie awake. is there scratching at my door? moments linger like hourglass, time seems to overlap. that never happened that's not what i said. the constance of the drum, feed it with your coals. never concerned, but always worried. don't tell me that i'm wrong. moments fade like memories, but i keep moving on. fight the fire with your flames. always manage to extinguish nothing. it burns a hole right through my pocket right to their hearts. we're all commercial. bleed your story to my ears. heavy eyes, they weigh heavy on my mind. looking forward, looking back. they feel one hundred pounds in my skull.

Faces In Clouds

moving forward, i suddenly freeze. distract myself for a moment, but only temporarily. too dark to see outlines, but bright enough to see i'm not lost. pavement cracks and narrow gaps. everyone seems unsure. minutes pass like hours. how will you face the day? just disregard their feelings. it always goes your way at the cost of their expense. never thinking twice or having regrets. too dark to see outlines of faces in the clouds. you're just the same as the last one.

March Comes In Like A Lion

tidal waves destroy, rip through the haul. tear down the sails. this storm is getting worse. we will be consumed and swallowed. you and me, we're lost at sea. send out a search party though no one will celebrate. i swear we've never been so close, while our lungs fill with water. i swear i've never been so wrong, broken down and altered. though we'll drown, our souls will find a way out. sink to the bottom and never ascend. never breathing.

Teaser Video #1

we recently recorded a short teaser video during band practice.  it sounds like a onslaught of ferrets having sex behind an industrial fan, but you get the idea. more to come soon. click the link and enjoy!

bs

the story thus far...

howdy random readers,

its been quite a while since i've written one of these, but since this is going to be more of a website than anything else, i better get back into it.

this is the website/home page for the new band i'm apart of, Sleepless. Sleepless has been in the works for some time now, since about last august. it sure seems like we're slacking hard then eh? wrong. My buddy Cam (bass/vocals), and i have been jamming and writing songs together since and before then. back in the day, Cam and i used to tour together in bands we used to be apart of in Ottawa. most of the time we wondered why the hell we didnt start a band on the side, seeing as how we clicked more than with most of our own band members. a few jams took place here and there (with our buddy Jeremy on drums), but nothing solid was ever put in place. it wasn't until Cam moved to Toronto and i moved back home that we started something more serious.

we began jamming once a week when we could, attempting to find a drummer in the process. this began the rigorous and ridiculous search of a drummer and fall of a band. the short version is as follows;

1. found a drummer, didn't cut it
2. found another, only came for two jams
3. a month goes by without jams, doubt taking over
4. band hiatus, i carry on with new members. both come for a couple jams, then never return.
5. the return of Cam.
6. try out another drummer, pretty decent and a buddy, but lacks interest and never comes back.
7. my buddy Matt tells me about his buddy Nathan, whos been drumming for a bunch of years and is most likely down for jamming.
8. i meet Nathan officially, cause the first time i was hammered, (actually, come to think of it, i was drunk the second time too. frig.). we plan a jam for after he gets married the following week. so myself and Cam panic, cause who knows how short the leash will be after marriage, we just met the guy, and we really don't want to go through the process of finding ANOTHER drummer. its this or nothing it seems.
10. Nathan offers to jam on the last day of his honeymoon (jams was then, but the honeymoon was not a known fact by myself and Cam.). Nathan already gets bonus points for committment.
11. jams take place. Nathan kicks ass big time and catches on real quick. all is good again.

so there you have it. there's the not-so-brief history of Sleepless. we have a lot of sweet things that we're really stoked about coming up in the not so distant future, including;

1. more teaser videos (of course)
2. promo pictures
3. good ol' demoing the songs and preproduction

and best of all...

4. recording our debut record and getting some live shows under our belts.

all this is happening only within a few months, and we've had only four jams. im beyond stoked to say the least, as are the udder fellers. they also may post blogs on here, i haven't thrown the idea yet to them, but we shall see. i will be updating this regularly and posting news and videos and much more as it comes, so just sit down and hold on, cause we're takin' you for a wee bit of a ride.
